AMDR provides a flexible macro framework

The acceptable macronutrient distribution ranges (45-65% carbohydrate, 20-35% fat, 10-35% protein of total calories) provide a flexible framework for healthy eating, with active individuals generally benefiting from the higher end of carbohydrate and protein ranges.

In plain English

Most healthy adults do fine eating within the standard ranges for carbs, fat, and protein. Active people usually need more carbs to fuel training and more protein to recover than people who sit most of the day.

Why it works

Each macronutrient serves distinct metabolic roles: carbohydrates are the primary fuel for moderate-to-high intensity exercise, protein provides amino acids for tissue repair and synthesis, and fat supports hormone production and nutrient absorption.

Why we call confidence high

National Academies and IOM recommendations are based on extensive evidence reviews. The 2024 update from the National Academies reaffirmed the ranges with minor adjustments.
