Most people weighing a half marathon plan are asking two things. Can I really run 13.1 miles? And will the training fit in a week that's already full? The first answer is usually yes, given a few months. The second depends on the plan you pick, and that's the choice this page is for.
It fits in fewer days than you'd think. Nearly half the plans here run on 4 days a week or fewer, and 26 of them on just 3. With 3 days, each run tends to have a clear job: one long, one with some faster running, one easy. Some plans are written for runners over 40, 50 and 60, and several build walk breaks into every run. If you can't run the whole way yet, a run/walk plan still gets you to the finish, and the walking counts as training.
Start from your week, not your goal. Look at a plan's week 1 and compare it with what you run now. Most beginner plans here peak somewhere between about 17 and 26 miles a week, and our first-half plans start from about 6 to 12. If week 1 already asks for more than you're doing, choose an easier plan or spend a few weeks building up first. A plan that starts where you are has the whole build to make you ready. One that starts ahead of you spends its first month catching you up.
What a good plan looks like. The long run and the weekly total climb gradually, because sharp jumps in weekly running raise the risk of injury. A lighter week every few weeks lets your body absorb the work that came before. And the last week or two ease off, because a taper before the race helps you run it better. Every review on this page says how a plan handles these.
If you've been hurt. Talk to your doctor or physical therapist before you start. A few weeks on a return-to-running plan before a half marathon build is time well spent.
A first half is worth doing for its own sake. Many runners finish one and stop there, happy. If the marathon is on your mind, though, the half is good preparation. One study found that first-time marathoners who had already raced a half got hurt less in training. It's a single study, so read it as a strong lead rather than a promise, but it's a good reason to run a half before a first marathon rather than skip it.
